PROTOTYPE 2

1.

bed frame  assembly

This was less difficult then I expected since I thought I was supposed to actually cut the metal bed frame but the full-size bed actually has a split in the middle so i just used certain components and assemble them.

2.

3d modelling

I used fusion to model the spines that will cover the bed frame.

3.

Assembly

idea

The skin layers will then be attached to the bedframes which will be pushed and pulled

mechanism

By moving closer or further away, the other side’s fabric will stretch or shrink

material

3d printed bedframes, biomaterial, silicone casting on fabric

technology

MQTT

4.

Skin

idea

recreating skin layers using different materials
the more artificial (silicone) vs the more natural (bioplastic)

mechanism

the site of interaction
the visualization of membranes

material

silicone, wine, agar agar, glycerine

technology

bio-plastics, silicone casting

5.

membrane retouches

The boobs were too heavy to be pulled while the corners were too fragile. Also, boobs are such strong signifiers of feminism which is great but not the major focus of my project. People viewing it also immediately think about plastic surgery. Thus I recasted two other trays of silicone to better embody my idea.

idea

blurring the binary poles between hardness and softness of body
using soft cotton laser cut to recreate spines

mechanism

lasercut cotton physically support the silicone not to be torn apart
silicone enables more elastic qualities for stretching and rebouncing

material

silicone, wine, cotton

technology

silicone casting

mechanical elements

I 3d printed spools for tranforming circular movements to linear motions. The process did not work very well initially, for the fish wire I was using constantly got jammed in the gaps between the spool and the motors. I tested with different forms of motors and the inner support as below:

the innitial design where I tried to use the cone to stabilize the wires but it made the wire to move upwards, causing them jammed inside the gap
I straightened the center cord and it lessened the possibility to get stuck but the problem still exists.
I added lid to the spool so the wire wouldn’t get jammed in the gap

mechanism

transform circular movements to linear motion

material

PLA 3d print
