EXPERIENCE DESIGN

1.

experiential framework

Quite / Loud
To create a sense of intimacy, the entire space will be quite while human whispers would be the ambient sounds

Open Circulation / linear Flow / Predetermined
The experience will be semi-guided with a fluid itenerary. Yet only minimum guidance will be incorporated with maximum agency afforaded to the participants.
cerebral & emotional
it will be both cerebral and emotional in order to embrace all aspects of communications

planned visit / drop in visitors
In order to make the experience as accessible as possible, it will be open to all while there will be wall-texts serving as on-boarding.
collaboration & competition
the form of the interaction can be both sides since in intimate relationships it never lingers on either poles

innitial plan (abandoned)
wearables + inflatables

I started with the idea of wearables and inflatables. The idea was to have two participants wearing an elastic mask and by stretching and shrinking the fabric, it creates the inflatable installation in the room to inflate and deflate, signifying the power dyanamic shifts between people. However, I soon realized that this was both technically hard to achieve and conceptually misleading. For the former part, not all of the people would like to put on stuffs when entering an installation. For the second one, by wrapping individuals into one layer of membrane is the completely negative to what I am exploring, which is actually about treasuring the membrane that separates and indivudalizes people, instead of merging them.

reframed plan
bedframe +  recreated skin membranes

After talking to artists, researchers and friends and after digesting everything from our conversation, I came up with this plan of using the bed frame splitted in half as the very foundation of my installation. Then I am thinking of layering it with soft materials that recreates human skin texture.
One of the bedframe will be covered with biomaterial while the other with silicone, both embodying human skins. The soft skin-like membranes are the folded screen in Wu Hong’s essay, the corporeal space in Merleau Ponty’s ideas and the penetrable distance of porcupines. It is the major site of interaction for the participants to perceive.

4. telophase
either swap positions or leave
1. prophase
participants align at the center of the room
2. anaphase
participants go to the two physical installations individually
1. metaphase
participants align at the center of the room

1. prophase
participants align at the center of the room
2. anaphase
participants go to the two physical installations individually
3. anaphse
participants move either closer or further away from the installation, triggering the other side of the installation’s membrane to move
4. telophase
either swap positions or leave

It is a two participants experience. The two physical installations are set in the same room but with certain distance, communicating in real-time. Whenever one participant move closer or further away from their side of the installation triggers the call and response interactions for the other installation shown to the other participant, and vice versa. Later on, whispers of the participants will also be transmitted to create further ambient sounds for affects.
